About Boskay
Born and raised in the dusty streets of Rustenburg Kuki Mothata was exposed to music like any other 13 year old in a growing South Africa. In a country where Radio played a major part in music Kuki listened to Radio stations such as Kaya fm, Y fm and Metro fm. With kwaito having been the predominant genre especially amongst black South Africans it took radio presenters such as Dj Fresh and Dj Khabzela on Y-fm with their deep house shows to inspire this young man into listening to the genre. With the increase of Dj’s who were compiling music in South Africa grew his love for house music, being inspired by top names like Glen Lewis, Vinny Da Vincy, Dj Fresh, Iggy Smallz, Khabzela, Oskido and Christos through their compilations. With his passion growing and knowledge of the music it was only at the age of 16 when he was 1st exposed to live events in his home town at a place called Kwa Raphala where local Dj’s would play international productions and local productions.
It was only in varsity that Kuki who was going by the nickname Boskay thought of looking into production, motivated by local producers Black Coffee and Culoe De Song he sought for some mentoring from a friend of his and varsity mate Shaka Zulu. Through observation, enquiring and practice he learnt the basics of the art of production and went onto doing his first project which was a remix of Busi Mhlongo’s song taken from the Urban Zulu album which he sent to Robert Trunz (label head of MELTZ), there it was approved and released on various online stores in 2010 on iTunes and afrodesiamp3. Since then he has been working on identifying and perfecting a sound that is distinctive to his understanding of music and appealing to a majority of house heads across the world. Going through challenges such as getting his music to big labels and marketing his music and record label Porao Records he has kept going because of his passion to keep house music alive and to put South Africa on the map not for being the biggest importers of house music but the biggest exporters!
