About Gatwitch

Gatwitch stands for "child of the land" in Nuer, a language of a Nilotic tribe in South Sudan. When choosing a name for his record label, Emmanuel Jal wanted something that not only captured his essence and spirituality, but was also sentimental and encompassing of his culture, heritage and dreams.

Gatwitch was founded in 2007 by a former child soldier and now an internationally acclaimed rapper and human rights activist, Emmanuel Jal. It is a small, independent, contemporary, multifaceted, dynamic and most importantly unorthodox record label/music house. Alongside recording, financing and marketing the artists it signs, Gatwitch's primary goal is to create an international platform for independent, freelance and unsigned artists to compete with well known musicians in all genres. It strives to expand and enrich the current music market by creating and increasing opportunities and competition. Gatwitch is comprised of three main branches; it's primary being a record label (Gatwitch Records), and its subsidiaries being a music publisher (Gatwitch Publishings) and marketing and promotions service (Gatwitch Media).

The contemporary world thrives on digital technology. The music industry is no longer built on the foundations of selling solid vinyl records, CDs, mini-disks, etc. It has made a metamorphosis into the digital realm, where megabytes and streaming rule. In order to cater for such explicit change, the label's three main branches will primarily be accessible and operating online. Please visit our Web site at www.gatwitch.com or our myspace page at www.myspace.com/gatwitchrecords to learn more.

Gatwitch online does not only permit access to Gatwitch Records, Publishing and Media, but is also an mp3 store which, unlike many music Web sites, will permit UNSIGNED artists to market themselves, as well as sell and distribute their music internationally alongside signed artists.
