| About Amergin | Amergin Amergin’s music is born from a Celtic Soul, with Irish musical roots that embrace the diverse influences of the New World, which gave birth to songs which were shaped by the contemporary musical landscape. In legend, when the namesake Amergin first set foot on the shores of Ireland, he did so with a powerful song that invoked his connection to the spirit and nature of the land, which after some adversity was to become his new home. It is an ageless theme which courses through the heart of modern-day Canada’s immigrant culture and one which Amergin’s music and lyrics embrace, encompassing all the aspects of a new life in an exciting new land, while still acknowledging a sense of what was left behind. Bernard McMahon is the voice of Amergin, a native of County Galway, who was inspired as much by the explosion of grunge as he was by the vibrant live Irish music scene he started playing in when he was just sixteen. In Ireland, failure to land a major record deal usually leads to economic extinction. After experiencing the usual combination of growing pains for young bands playing original material, he left his homeland in search of himself and dreams of a better life. The journey eventually finds him doing a solo gig in a San Francisco Café, where he meets Danny Kenny an Irish ex-pat with considerable music business experience. Inspired by Bernard’s raw talent and musical vision, he soon becomes deeply involved as producer and co-writer. One of the Gaelic translations of Amergin is “born of song,” and so it is this collaboration that leads to the birth of the first songs, and the musical journey continues on to Vancouver, Canada. After six months playing live and developing ideas, a coherent sound and vision for the music starts to emerge and work begins on crafting and assembling a collection of songs for the first record, which deals with the familiar themes of longing and belonging and the many different forms that can take. The themes may sound familiar, but the unique vocal and musical talents of Amergin create a mystical, musical and lyrical landscape. They forge into a distinct modern Celtic identity that brings a dynamic new life to stories of love and loss. Ultimately all great music is about storytelling, whether it’s Dave Matthews, Dave Grohl or David Gray.
