The Beginning : Started out hip hop djing at 14 yo, got heavily addicted to collecting Rap vinyl initially, followed soon after by drum breaks in 86 then funk 45's in the mid 90's and anything funky on vinyl, searching in London's best independant shops (You know the ones) and second hand record shops, car boots, charity shops and auctions for samples & breaks mainly. Recorded as half production team under the name Contagious Productions which produced Intelligent maddness-No room ep & Mind over matter sets. Under the name Contagious also had several tracks released on Kista's vapours label Abstract Error Lp, one of which with Dj Wrecka. The same track was also released in Usa on a Bomb Hip Hop compilation. The overall feeling is of being locked in a club with a DJ who only plays good records and never lets any song outstay its welcome. Think DJ Shadow or DJ Rectangle. Invest in this album and you�ll be rewarded with over an hour of cool, funky and practically instrumental breakdance music. Words ADAM IRVING (FROM ATOMIC DUSTER) T: An underground hip-hop album, if ever there was one. I'm not even entirely sure that hip-hop is the correct term. This is a bit like a lighter hearted version of Dalek, not that this is a bad thing, seeing as they've consistently been one of the most innovative acts of the genre over the past decade. This album demands your attention, from the arresting title track, through some gloriously uplifting world beats, otherworldly spoken samples and thoroughly entrancing melodies. Brilliant. N: I get the feeling that although this would appear to have taken influence (and samples) from many a genre, perhaps Josh Davis' alter ego DJ Shadow or James Lavelle's Unkle might be considered the godfathers of Funk Provida's particular brew, although many of the earlier hip-hop vibes play their part. Again, this shouldn't be considered a sleight, and as my cohort has pointed out, this is nothing less than "brilliant", one where you will hear new facets the deeper you delve. Perhaps the most innovative recording we've heard so far today, if not..., well you get the picture, this is verging on great! 10/10 |
