Benjawan Poomsan Becker was born in Bangkok and spent her childhood in Yasothon, a small province in rural northeast Thailand. Since her family is ethnic Laotian, she grew up speaking both the Thai and Lao languages. She received a B.A. in English from Khon Kaen University in Thailand. While studying for her M.A. degree at Kobe University in Japan, she gained extensive experience teaching the Thai language to foreigners at the Japan-Thailand Trade Association and the Berlitz Language School in Osaka. In the United States, Benjawan has taught Thai language classes at Stanford University, at a number of Thai temples in the San Francisco Bay Area, and to numerous private students. She has over fifteen years experience as a professional translator and court interpreter in the Thai and Lao languages, and has been a registered Thai and Lao interpreter with the Judicial Council of California since 1995.

Benjawan is also a professional writer and editor. She has written more than twenty books for English speakers learning the Thai and Lao languages. She is a bestselling author in her home country of Thailand and internationally on Amazon.com, being well-known for her books Thai For Beginners and Lao For Beginners, along with dictionaries for these two languages.

Benjawan is regarded as an authority on the languages and social customs of Thailand and her language books are praised as being easy to read, user-friendly, and highly informative. Her latest book, The Interpreter s Journal is the recipient of the 2011 Asian Book Publishing Award for Best Book / Best Writer on Asian Socio-Economic or Media scene.
