I've seen this graphic roefbe, it's a great visualisation of how much revenue can be brought in through independent means.however there's one vital thing it misses and that's royalties, I mean, yeah, it's kind of covered through Rhapsody, Spotify and Last.fm but one thing it misses out is radio play, and manufacture.Whilst it's not the most sure-fire way of getting paid for your work, collection agencies (the only ones I know off hand are the UK and Ireland ones, PRS and IMRO) will collect a list of your radio plays, if your song has been covered by a band, and in particular for PRS (who have a contract with the MCPS) how many duplicates of your song have been made.All of these will add you your royalties, which is why independent sales through Amazon or iTunes is such an appealing prospect, because you're not only getting a fee paid to you because someone has bought your product, but because it has been copied as well.That said your third point of other product related to the album is still the most important, and one should keep in mind, that at least 20% of an audience at a concert will by a shirt. Couple this with any posters or related product the band puts out and the fact that all merchandise sales go straight to the band, it's good to have other revenues.But it is also good to have more than just one product. There are many musicians who subsidise their musical gigs with teaching their instruments, teaching theory, and some minor session work.But yeah, it does kind of shatter the rock star illusion doesn't it? Real musicians see this kind of graph, and decide it's worth it
