Blind since the age of three, Reuben is testimony that physical disability is not an excuse to be mediocre. He grew up in Bunyore, a densely populated area in Western Kenya. The warmth of the people and the simplicity of life, unaffected by urbanization, played a big part in making him who he is. In the third track on his Country album “Never Alone”, Kigame sings about Sweet Bunyore, the place where he was born and drives that nostalgia to the 4th track titled, "Back To My Childhood." . Reuben spent part of his childhood in Kisumu, which is right next to Lake Victoria where he attended Kibos Primary School for the Blind. It is here that he fell in love with the Luo language which, he says, is idiomatically richer than his own Luhya language. He loves languages and has endeared himself to many with his attempts at the Kikuyu, Lingala, Luo and even a bit of German languages.

After Kibos Primary School, Reuben went to Thika High School for the Blind where he undertook his O-Level and A-Level Education. Having successfully completed these two, He joined Kenyatta University and graduated with an Upper 2nd Class Honours Degree in Education.
