About tsar nicholas III & the exiles | Tsar Nicholas III & The Exiles "...as good a band as any at what they do. I love Nick's songs, I love his lyrics; their themes are perennial, and in many ways pertinent to the now. I imagine the cactus as a symbol of drought. It stands in the desert, all smug because it can live on so little water. Hard to feel smug when we're all under water though isn't it you prickly green fuck? Still, you've got to feel for the ones who think they can live in a desert alone. Ladies and gentlemen, I present Aqua Cactus Blues" “A refreshingly unique performance” Released on Wild About Nothing Records CD and MP3 Download Contact: Nick Rafferty: +447930356172, nickwallace71@hotmail.com Tsar Nicholas III and the Exiles The fluently guttural, lyrical weirdness of Tsar Nicholas III & The Exiles was first brought blinking into the light with their debut, “Letter of Marque”. Their second album, “King of Corners”, sees the band pilfering random elements of late night jazz from the dark corners of seedy dive bars, in order to chaperone the listener through a series of ramshackle tales based on the jazz cornet player Buddy Bolden. This dark and witty assembly of eleven soul stripping tracks, speaks of madness, murder and mayhem. The Exiles’ lo-fi sound creates the perfect atmosphere for Nick's storytelling lyrics and observations drawing the audience into the heart of his tales. Described as ‘refreshingly unique’, it’s impossible to avoid vocal comparisons to Tom Waits, Johnny Cash and Nick Cave in frontman Nick's dark, but humorous story based lyrics. The group play brooding, bluesy Americana with just the right amount of insanity to create something ‘thrilling and feeling and melodic and powerful’.
