About Saboi Shatel

Saboi started singing in 1996 with friends Thandi and Barbra. Like they say, three is a crowd so the group later was left for Saboi and Barbra to continue as a duet. The group was called Shatel from the word shuttle to mean the sky is the limit. They performed at many shows and won many competitions, the main one being the then annual Women in Music where they were spotted by many would-be promoters. The first single from Shatel, Niswalele, appeared on the Rhythm Nation Project and went on to secure the ladies their first record label with Mondo Music, which was by then the country’s biggest and best music label.
Subsquently, their first album “Chikondi” was recorded under Mondo Music in 2001 and the album got Shatel and Zambia the first Kora nomination in South Africa, shows in Japan and made them to travel extensively locally. The album had hits like “Gentelemani”, “Chilumendo” and “Naitopela”. The second album was called “Unbreakable” and was released in 2002 with songs songs like Chikondi Chamumudima, Wainona and Sichaba Sahesu. Unbreakable had a strong message to celebrities in all spheres to encourage them that they are stronger than their critiques and that no matter what rumours, unconstructive criticism, etc, they might face, they should have unbreakable spirits. This was a message Shatel was also giving to their haters that they were strong and Unbreakable despite what some sectors of society might want to scheme or were scheming against them.
When Barbra moved to a different town, it became difficult for the group to work together in two different towns and went different ways. Saboi released her first solo project in 2006 entitled Nalila which had songs like Mema awo, Akiyayi and Aneninyanda. The Current album Shine a Light is the second solo project and a fourth to Saboi’s name. It also features Barbra on 3 songs, other featured artists being Bob Muli, Milz and Bersha Rodney.
