About Liam Naughton | I grew up in Kilmallock Co. Limerick in lush Ireland but I’ve been living in dry Perth WA since 2004. Coming from a very musical family on both sides, I’ve been singing since before I could speak. From choir soprano to competitive singing in Karaoke (it was huge in the early 90’s back home and I was crowned King of Karaoke (twice), to walk-on singer with the local pub (Dermot O Rourke’s / Flanagan’s bar) guitarist, I found myself singing the same old songs over and over. Yawn! That was it!!! I needed to learn the guitar so I could play and sing songs from my favourite artists, Neil Young, Nirvana, Radiohead, David Gray. Sounds a bit bleak but my collection also contains the Smashing Pumpkins greatest hits . Somebody did once infect my CD collection with a bootleg copy of a Craig David disc and understandably I had to cut them off! My musical palate has a fairly broad spectrum of taste from classical, pop, folk, rock, punk, alternative, indi, electronica, dance etc…. Anything that sounds good really… I don’t like to pigeon hole myself! Anyway, I haven’t been playing the guitar too long, about 8, wait it’s been almost 10 years now… OK that’s a fair while. When I moved to Perth and finally dragged myself out of the back packers, I found myself living in a flat by myself with a bit of time on my hands. Always having had a distant itch to write my very own album and now armed with an array of guitar chords (thanks Jimmy King), I started writing down some lyrics and tried getting some melodies together. Having laboured over some very harrowing lyrics of a very sensitive subject matter I finally recorded my first song “Badman”. It was recorded in 2007 at Jericho Music in Perth. The song has some interesting musical twist and well thought out lyrics. I enjoyed the whole writing process and decided to try and develop the craft. One year later I was back to Jericho Music to quickly demo 16 tracks with just the acoustic guitar and vocals. Each track had a strong emphasis on lyrics, sometimes risky but complied as a variety of alternative rock, ballad, folk and a bit of comedy thrown in. Surprisingly “Infidelity” was played on Australia’s national Triple J radio station which really spun me out, but alas I was never able to build on it. Put that down to a bit of a character flaw…. Anyway! Having had a bit of a hiatus since I have now just completed my first EP, titled “Cornerstone”. It’s a collection of 4 tracks from the 2008 demos that have been given a full band and orchestral arrangement by myself and the very talented Jerry Freedman of Jericho Music. Not having been deliberate, the track choices show variety in writing style that’ll keep the listener interested. Recorded/mixed at Jericho Music and mastered in Abbey Road studios London, “Cornerstone” represents a year of squeezing in recording time between work, parenting and numerous other interests. Anxiously getting through the mixing process and finally arriving at the sound I was chasing, so far, It’s been a great experience……..Now , go and tell all your friends Thanks for taking the time to read and apologies to any Craig David fans. |
