C’NKY SIWELA
ARTIST BACKGROUND
Rising star of South Africa doing Afro fusion and Jazz.
With two CD’s behind his name and a number of appearances in South Africa and the United States, young classically trained flautist C’nky Siwela is establishing himself as an emerging force on the popular music scene.
Recently on june /29/ 2014 he was one of the participants that performed at the Rosebank Listening Session organised by Down 2 Earth Musik.
C’nky’s flute playing has a unique melodic yet energetic sound that is influenced by his classical training, gospel, jazz, soul, R&B, traditional African folk music, as well as the more popular contemporary dance beats from South Africa and further afield.
In February 2014 he received the award for Best Afro-Pop Artist at the South Africa Community Radio Awards in Johannesburg following the release of his second CD, Reminiscent of the sounds, in 2013. The 12 tracks on the CD reflect his diversity of talents as singer and flautist, but also as composer, arranger and producer. The tracks also showcase the creative combination of various musical influences into a very soulful and jazzy South African fusion. C’nky Siwela is currently working on his new Afro fusion album under Down 2 Earth Musik. The album will be released end of August 2014.
C’nky has played for the Soweto Youth Orchestra under respected music educationist Michael Masote. He also makes time to play flute/piccolo for the UNISA Music Foundation Symphony Orchestra. He has worked with the internationally renowned South African jazz saxophonist McCoy Mrubata, hip hop artist HHP and many other local musicians.


HIS CAREER ACHIEVEMENTS
He attended the Jazz Education Network in New Orleans in 2011 where he exchanged musical skills with greats like Harold Baptiste Jnr, Christian McBride, Bobby Watson and others. C’nky has also toured New York, New Jersey, Chicago, and Kentucky.
C’nky has been booked to perform at various corporate gigs, clubs, conferences and festivals, including:
• Tshwane Tourism Awards
• Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival
• South African Jazz Education(SAJE) in Cape Town
• Nelson Mandela Birthday Concert;
• 2008 & 2012 Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition.

While making his name as a professional musician, C’nky continues to play a role in his hometown of Temba, outside Pretoria. He serves as the artistic and educational director at a community based music education project called Tsa Lapeng Music Initiative where he teaches flute and music theory, as well as a former music teacher to the Tshwane Metro Police Band in 2013.

He is also the founder of the C’nky Siwela Flute Institute(CSFI) and has recently founded a gospel group called Hammanskraal Joyful Sounds. Jazz saxophonist McCoy Mrubata has only praise for C’nky’s work, saying that since they started working together a few years ago, C’nky has impressed him with his discipline and dedication to his craft, adding that C’nky is destined to reach great heights in South Africa and abroad
