Johnny Oberly). I am a member of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe from the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. His mother is a Shoshone - Arapaho from Fort Washakie, WY. My father is a Comanche - Osage from Lawton, OK. I grew up on the Wind River Reservation until my high school graduation. I was active in sports and other outdoor activities. I started playing the guitar in my sophomore year of high school and I almost immediately started writing lyrics and songwriting. I played with a high school band called "nuclear grizzlies" for a couple of years before going off to college. In college, I discovered “open mics” and would venture out to the local coffee shops and restaurants to play in Durango, CO. I began singing traditionally at this time; I currently enjoy traditional singing at the Ute and Shoshone Sundances, Ute Bear Dance and at Powwows. I am a Men’s Northern Traditional dancer, Sundancer and Gourd dancer. I have also composed traditional northern and southern songs and have incorporated this style of singing in my contemporary Native American songwriting as well. I began playing the Native American flute approximately ten years ago and in this time I have discovered my natural talent for playing the flute. I have played for a variety of venues for many diverse audiences. Johnny was a featured performer at the Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain and J.W. Marriott Starr Pass Resorts and released a CD called “Native Flutescapes” in 2009-2011. He recently completed working on his third solo CD “Hey Brother” which will feature original acoustic songs. In Tucson, AZ Johnny played with “DARK SKY2012” – an original metal band in Tucson, AZ and also played Bass for “SIGNALS” a Rush Tribute band. In 2006, he released his first CD “Creator be with us” a collection of original Native American flute songs that composed and produced on his own independent record label, Oberly Records. In 2008 he released his second CD “Back to Yesterday” which is a collection of contemporary songs. My songwriting is very eclectic and covers a wide range of musical styles and genres. As a Native artist, my vision is to be able to reach out to Native people and communities and spread a message of wellness, determination, self-sufficiency, unity and healing though music.
