About Derek L. Hoffman

I'm just a mountain boy playing this game called life. I started playing the violin when I was in 5th grade. Shortly after starting, my family moved to the mountains. This is where I started playing the fiddle. I played for a bit and due to a non proficiant teacher and peer preasure I put it up. In our area it just wasn't "cool" to play the fiddle. After a number of years of messing with the guitar and realizing that everyone plays the guitar, I came to the realization, that yes playing the fiddle is cool. I dusted it off and she became my friend, "Anastasia". After being a solo musician for 20 or so years I was intraduced to a couple that played bluegrass, The Dupree Duo. They got me to get on stage a bit and enter a few contests. I played at the Fiddlers on the Arkansas and Fiddlers on the Gorge. I didn't do very well do to stage fright, but I did do it. Now and then I get the opportunity to get on stage at the local bars and coffee shops. I still have to get over that nervousness of playing in front of folks. It is getting better. There is nothing like the apriciation of a standing ovation and people swarming you when you are done playing, telling you that it was awsome playing. I still have alot to learn. After years of playing the fiddle I needed more. I started playing the mandolin, then the dulcimer, then keyboard, then the native american flute, then came the penny whistle, the congas, the djembe, dumbek, and anything that I could get my hands on I seemed to be able to make music with. This is why I can not dedicate myself to one genere. After hearing Wayne Dyer say not to die with your music inside you, I descided to try to get out and share it a bit more. So here I am. I guess we will see where this game called life, takes us.
