Born John Illingworth Smith in Victoria, Australia in 1965 to English parents.
Migrated back to the UK in 1975.
John began playing the guitar aged 6.5 years, learning classical music. He always wanted to to do his own thing and learned some basic chords.
John was always strongly influenced by the Beatles as his only access to real music in rural Australia was his Fathers tape collection in which they featured strongly.
He started writing his own material from the age of 11 and formed his first band at school called ‘The Bishops of Destruction’.
After leaving home and moving to Salisbury in 1989 John began writing songs in earnest, forming a duo with Mark Robinson called ‘Corona Mundi’.
Mark was young but a talented producer and they recorded a string of Johns Songs.
In 1993, through a mutual friend, John was lucky enough to meet Jolyon Dixon and Paul Luther both at the beginning of their professional music careers. Quite a magical and prolific period began not only in their song writing, but also in their recording and performing.
‘The Widgets’ – John Smith, Jolyon Dixon, Paul Luther, Stu Ross and Peter Huntington, were formed and performed hundreds of times in and around the Salisbury area.
Even when gigging became difficult, due to the bands various professional projects, they still met up at every opportunity to play, write and record in the studio.
Due to family commitments Johns writing has taken a back seat but he has recently picked up the guitar again and realised that now is the right time to get his material out there to the wider public.
John writes in many genres including indie, rock, country, folk and ballads and prides himself on knowing how to write a good hook either melodically or lyrically but usually both.
In 1993 Phil Collins liked his material so much that he passed a tape to his publisher Dave Massey at Hit & Run. Unfortunately, at that time, he didn’t have enough solid material to gain himself a deal.
John feels that now, with a catalogue of some 150 songs that the time is right look for a publishing deal.
Please see Itunes and Amazon for recently added material in the form of two EPs – On the Verge and Lets Do It.
Thanks for reading and enjoy the music!
