Pat McMullan was born in Belfast in 1952. He grew up there and was influenced by traditional Irish, rock and blues music. He joined his first band `Doll`s House` in 1969 as a bass player and toured around Ireland playing on the same circuit as Rory Gallagher and Thin Lizzy. He moved to London with some friends and in time he became acquainted with English musicians and started to play with them. He met Glen Stoner who introduced him to Richie Blackmore an old schoolmate of Glen`s. Pat and Glen joined ’Screaming Lord Sutch’ to make up the Savages. This band had formerly included Richie Blackmore, Jimmy Page and Keith Moon. With Lord Sutch he toured all over the UK playing 50`s rock and roll. At one concert in Yorkshire the police asked them to help spot any suspicious character in the audience as they were looking for the `Yorkshire ripper` at the time and as Lord Sutch had had a hit with `Jack the ripper` maybe the real ripper could have been there. Charlie Morgan who went on to play drums with Elton John and who had already known Pat for some years joined the band.
In 1977 Pat joined a band called `The Count Bishops` an up and coming band in London at that time. They were the first band to be signed to Chiswick Records and soon to follow on this label were ’Motorhead’ and ’The 101ers’ with Joe Strummer. The Bishops made 2 albums with Pat and singles like ’I take what I want`, `Sometimes good guys don`t wear white` and `I want candy` and went on tours. The Count Bishops got a residency at the ’Marquis club’ in London`s Westend where they met and made friends with many of the bands of that time like ’The Sex Pistols’. ’Status Quo’, ’The Damned’ and ’The Squeeze’.
One of the guitarists in the Bishops, Zen, Sadly died after he crashed his car. Being the main gig organizer the band unfortunately didn`t continue for long after this. Dave Tice the front man went back to Australia where he now works in a duo with Mark Evans from ’ACDC’. Pat and Johnny went on to join ’Doctor Feelgood’.
